Beginning January 1, 2012, the following electronic items will be banned from Illinois landfills (P.A. 97-0287) from all sources under penalty of law.
- Televisions
- Electronic Keyboards
- Video Game Consoles
- Digital Converter Boxes
- Monitors
- Facsimile Machines
- Electronic Mice
- Videocassette Recorders
- Printers
- Scanners
- Small Scale Servers
- Portable Digital Music Players
- Cable Receivers
- Satellite Receivers
- Computers (including desktop /notebook/netbook/tablet)
- Digital Video Disc Recorders & Players
Please disseminate this information to your communities and customers/clients. Electronic recycling opportunities exist throughout Illinois, and most programs accept more items than those listed in the legislation. Manufacturers are funding recycling of residential items through registered recyclers. A business, government, institution or non-profit wanting to offer collection services should become familiar with the law.
Every business that sells electronics in Illinois is required to have signage that informs customers of the ban and recycling options. Statewide information is available through these online sources:
